Healthcare Reform: Quality or Costs?

Posted by: tfetherling  /  Tags: , , , , , ,  /  Comments: 1

The Nashville Tech Story (7/31/09)

Part II – Is Quality or Cost More Important?

In Part I we discussed the amount of money being spent on healthcare.  Today, we will talk more directly to the opportunity of healthcare and technology.

We have the best healthcare system in the world.  Well not really, according to the 2009 WHO World Health Statistics.  It is good, but we are not the best.  However, we do spend the most per capita.  So are we really getting good value for our money?

A local firm, Data Advantage has created the Hospital Value Index to help consumers understand which hospitals provide the best quality at the best price.  It is surprising to see who is number 1 in Nashville.

Don’t care about costs?  I  just want the best hospital when I need care.  This is a prevailing theme when we need care.  Well the government is here to help us once again.  Visit Hospital Compare to get a detailed view of outcomes in US Hospitals.

How about if we just cut the administrative cost of paying for all the procedures across the United States?  Did you know there are approximately 13 billion transactions a year in America?  Across town, Emdeon’s US Healthcare Index projects a 20% increase in electronic transactions would save approximately $34 Billion.  That would be a good start.

What do you get when you mix engineering and technology?  The Onora Group.  The first question we had was “What does Onora mean?”  Onora mean honor or valor.

Onora Group, LLC is a Nashville based technical staffing company that specializes in staffing information technology, engineering and accounting/finance professionals.  Originally from Michigan, President and CEO Jason Childs is focused on building his firm in the automotive engineering, technology, and finance industries.

It was an enjoyable experience getting to know Jason and his team.  If you would like for us to visit with your team, please contact Sara Carter at scarter@technologycouncil.com.

Healthcare Reform: Deja Vu

The Nashville Tech Story (7/29/09)

Part I – Deja Vu

I remember the last time we had this debate as a country.  It was 1997.  The Internet was still in its infancy.  AOL was the dominant brand.  Yahoo was an upstart.  Google hadn’t launched.

Hillary was leading the charge to change healthcare.  Healthcare was only $1.1 trillion and a measly 13.5% of the GDP.  Let’s fast forward to 2007, the most current year reported.  Total health expenditures reached $2.2 trillion (doubled in 10 years), which translates to $7,421 per person or 16.2 percent of the nation’s GDP.

In 10 more years, will it be 20 percent of the GDP?  My guess is yes, unless a true revolution occurs.

Fortunately, our government is very good at accounting for healthcare expenditures.  Visit this link to check out the detailed national healthcare expenditures.

Wow, who pays for the healthcare?  Businesses (25 percent), households (31 percent), other private sponsors (4 percent), and governments (40 percent).  In short, we all do.  Our taxes go to pay for the government’s spend, business profits go towards the insurance burden most companies pay today.  It is a bleak picture.

What I do know is that this is really an exciting time for businesses in technology in Nashville, the Silicon Valley of Healthcare.  It is time for us to get educated on the topic and make our voices heard across the country.  The Nashville Health Care Council hosted a great luncheon last month with Msgrs. Perlin, Brailer, Detmer, and Stead and this month, we will follow it up with a detailed look at transparency and ehealth.  Get engaged with the conversation.

What is Innovation?

Posted by: tfetherling  /  Tags: , ,

The Nashville Tech Story (7/27/09)

Dictionary.com defines innovation as something new or different introduced.  I have always been intrigued by innovation and it still gets me dreaming when I hear the word.  What can we do better?  That is really the key question in innovation.

Product Innovation
Guy Kawasaki is one of my favorite thought leaders.  I watched a video this morning and thought he nailed the concept.  His innovation theory is based on four principles: 1. Deep, 2. Intelligent, 3. Complete, and 4. Elegant.  I think all four of these lead to simple.  We want and need simple product interfaces to buy.  Look at the line of products coming out of Apple today.  They are simple to use and we buy them.  Pandora is making Internet Radio easy.  HCA is making it easier for patients to pay bills online.  HealthSpring provides an online member services portal.

Individual Innovation
Innovation is not just about products.  People need to innovate themselves as well.  Professional development is critical to your success.  Where do you get started?  Nashville Start Up Weekend is slotted for October 9-11 and this is a great way for individuals to innovate themselves.  I was very impressed last year at NSW by the quality of talent in Nashville and the entrepreneurial drive in our community.  One of the innovations from the weekend was GPS Assassins.  This is an iPhone based game (additional platforms on the way) that is GPS based.  It is very cool and it came from Nashville.

Corporate Innovation
Sometimes, entire companies get stale and need to innovate.  Sometimes, it is hard to say we can do better at work, but this is when the best innovation occurs.  A lot of corporate cultures stifle innovation because risk taking is not embraced and rarely do people celebrate failures.  If you are going to innovate, some ideas will fail and that is ok.  Apple throws away about 95% of their designs.  Then they go at it again, and again, until they get it right.  Are you willing to throw 95% of product development away?

Are you ready to innovate?  The Nashville Technology Council has a program to help companies begin innovating.  Click here to learn more about Innovation Weekend.

FedEx Goes “Green” with Hybrid Vehicles

Posted by: tfetherling  /  Tags: , ,

The Nashville Tech Council (July 23, 2009)

FedEx has added 92 hybrid-electric trucks, bringing the number of delivery trucks converted to hybrid-electric systems from 172 to 264. The trucks were converted into hybrid vehicles in Charlotte, N.C. over the past six months, creating 50 temporary jobs in the area.

The FedEx hybrid-electric fleet has logged more than 4 million miles of service since being introduced in 2004. This conversion has reduced the use of fuel by 150,000 gallons and carbon dioxide emissions by 1,521 metric tons. This is the equivalent of removing 279 cars from the road annually.

The trucks are projected to improve fuel economy by 44 percent, decrease particle matter by 96 percent as well as reduce smog-causing emissions by 75 percent compared to the standard FedEx Express delivery truck.

The 92 hybrid vehicles will be placed into service in California, primarily in the Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco metropolitan areas.

Syntel applies Innovation in Nashville

Posted by: tfetherling

Syntel is a leading global provider of integrated Information Technology (IT) and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) solutions. Each and every day, Syntel helps Global 2000 clients operate their businesses more efficiently through innovation, technology, and wisdom. They deliver flexible, custom IT and KPO solutions that improve quality and reduce costs.

Syntel is focused on exploring, developing and adapting new, better ways to do this through Syntelovation and Innovation Centers. They are a nimble partner dedicated to collaboration with customers to help innovate, run a business more efficiently and create sustainable business advantage.

Entrepreneur Bharat Desai and his wife Neerja Sethi founded Syntel in 1980. Their founding vision was to deliver the highest quality service to ensure “customers for life.” It is this simple principle, along with the drive to constantly adapt the business model to create efficiency and meet the changing business needs of customers that has guided Syntel since its foundation.

In 1992, Syntel was one of the first US-based IT companies to realize the potential of Global Delivery model and opened Global Development Centers (GDC) in Cary, NC and Mumbai, India. In 2004, Syntel began its first Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) engagement, providing back-office asset management services for a major U.S. custodian bank. Today Syntel provides KPO services to both the banking and financial services and healthcare and life sciences sectors.

Syntel is a company devoted to exceeding the expectations of their customers through dedicated vertical practices in banking and financial services (including specialized units for cards & payments and capital markets), insurance, healthcare and life sciences, retail, logistics, and manufacturing, day in and day out. Its mission is to create new opportunities for its customers by harnessing the passion, talent, and innovation of nearly 12,000 Syntellers across the U.S., Canada, UK, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

While Syntel provides an extensive range of services for their customers, there are no “cookie cutter” solutions. Every solution is customized to the customers’ business challenges and objectives. This brand of consultative solution development is a key advantage of working with Syntel.

“We deliver repeatable, quality processes and output, but each engagement is tailored to deliver a unique solution in tune with customer priorities,” said Keshav Murugesh, Syntel Chief Executive Officer and President.

Syntel not only delivers value and innovation, but cost savings as well, through a hybrid delivery model, a capability that most of its customers take advantage of. The model is flexible enough to adapt to their customers’ specific business goals and brings together the best combination of resources – onsite and offshore – to form a seamless team.

Unlike many outsourcing firms that focus solely on offshoring as much work as possible, Syntel’s focus and priorities are considerably different. They concentrate on securing the maximum benefits their customers can derive from new delivery models, not on forcing work to offshore locations.

“Our hybrid delivery model is fully integrated into our customers’ organization. It allows them to integrate valuable intellectual capital and skills into their businesses,” said Murugesh.

Rock-solid infrastructure and PMI-based project management methodologies add critical reliability to this model.

In an effort to keep their employees highly skilled, Syntel created several in-house universities. These education programs ensure its workforce has full grasp of the business needs and issues of various industries, including healthcare & life sciences, insurance, and others. Syntel’s training groups build custom curriculum in conjunction with leading industry bodies and customers and Syntel employees are granted certification upon completion of different levels of coursework, including activities such as prototypes, white paper development, and more. The majority of Syntel’s healthcare employees have achieved Syntel’s healthcare certification and are now pursuing specialized certifications within the provider, payer and life sciences segments.

Since 2001, Syntel has had operations locally. Its Nashville GDC was launched to serve as the Healthcare Center of Excellence for the company, providing services to a large Nashville-based hospital chain. Syntel now incubates advanced healthcare business solutions from this region, including HL7 mapper, RCM upgrade testing automation framework, analytics around revenue cycle management clinical, financial, spend, and more. The mission of Syntel’s Nashville GDC is to bring together the knowledge and wisdom of technology, application and healthcare domain experts to craft new technology solutions in the healthcare arena.

“We firmly believe that we can add tremendous value through innovation to healthcare companies in and around the Nashville region. We understand the complexities of the U.S. Healthcare system across the payer, provider and life sciences value chain, work with market leaders and help stakeholders address and comply with the sweeping changes anticipated in the U.S. healthcare system.  This focus enables our customers to leverage their partnerships with Syntel to obtain enhanced expertise to build better solutions, improve efficiency and bring better and more cost effective care to the healthcare community,” said Murli Reddy, VP of Operations for Syntel’s Healthcare Vertical.

One way Syntel became active in the community was becoming a member of the Nashville Technology Council (NTC). Syntel joined the council in September of 2003 to stay knowledgeable of the leading technology in Nashville and the surrounding areas. Having access to seminars and focus groups coordinated by the NTC helped to provide this information.

“The NTC is interested in helping member companies get the most out of their memberships,” said Reddy. “Syntel addresses core IT and business issues of the healthcare and manufacturing industries in the Tennessee region. At the next level, our company brings advanced services in white spaces like medical banking, retail clinics, health exchanges, ICD-9 to ICD-10 conversion, and 4010 to 5010 migration.”

“The Nashville Technology Council‘s moves to facilitate debate requiring providers and payers to work together and create joint initiatives for the larger community can be strengthened through Syntel’s thought leadership in these white spaces. We look forward to enhancing the quality of technology use in Nashville with the help of the NTC.”

Road Trippin Wednesday – VACO – Wag, Swag, Tag

The Nashville Tech Story (7/22/09)

The Nashville Technology Council took the show on the road again today visiting Vaco in Brentwood.  Thanks to Troy Crabtree and Vaco for hosting us today.  Vaco has been a member for several years, so it was a good time to reconnect.  Vaco has experienced strong growth over the past few years.  I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they are headquartered here, but have grown to more than 26 offices.

Vaco matches the strong accounting, financial, IT and administrative professionals with the unique project and permanent needs of clients.  They have more than 250 internal employees and over 1000 consultants.  In 2008, they exceed the $100 revenue mark.  Awesome.

During our visit, we were both wagging with excitement as they learned more about the Tech Council and we learned more about Vaco.  Jerry Bostelman, one of the founders of Vaco, has us in stitches.  They gave us some nice swag, and we played tag on follow up items.  It was a great visit.  If you want us to visit you, drop us a line.

I also learned about DevLink. It is important that everyone in our community keep us in the loop on major conferences in the Nashville area.

Also today, there is a Job Fair at the Maxell House Hotel.

Belmont University Awarded $575,000 Grant

The Nashville Tech Story (July 21, 2009)

Belmont University was awarded a $575,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant entitled ‘Pathways to Science, Technology and Mathematics’ is a part of the Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program of the NSF.

Through this grant, 20 students will be awarded $10,000 scholarships, which can be renewed for up to four years. These students will also be given opportunities to engage in internships, undergraduate research, and visits to scientific and technological sites.

“The students with interest and aptitude for the Sciences, Technology and Mathematics have especially bright futures ahead as long as they have the proper preparation,” said Belmont University Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Glenn Acree. “We, in the School of Sciences, at Belmont, expect to be very active in spreading this word and in preparing these students for the challenges ahead.”

The Pathways grant objectives include: increasing quantity and quality of students majoring in STEM disciplines, strengthening retention of these students, providing knowledge of various opportunities for careers and graduate studies and enriching relationships with high schools and industry across Middle Tennessee.

“In addition to taking advantage of the T3 guest speakers’ series, each of the Pathways Scholars will be provided the connections to engage in internship experiences and also build relationships through an industry mentor program. We look forward to working with the Nashville Technology Council through each of these programs,” said Acree.

Belmont credits its involvement with the Nashville Technology Council, as well as the commitment of the Middle Tennessee Technology sector to collaborate with area institutions of higher education, as one of the factors that helped them secure this S-STEM grant.

The S-STEM program emphasizes the importance of recruiting students to the disciplines of the Sciences, Technology and Mathematics, mentoring and supporting students through degree completion and partnering with employers to facilitate student career placement in the STEM workforce.

“This is the first of what I expect will be many grants with this type of impact to be awarded to our faculty over the next few months and years,” said Acree.
