2011 Grads Greeted with Friendly Job Market

Posted by: tfetherling  /  Tags: , , ,

A story out by Katilin Madden from Career Builder highlights the hiring and and salary trends likely to meet new grads in 2011.

“After three years of disappointing hiring and salary trends for entry-level workers, this year’s crop of college grads are facing improving job prospects. Not only are hiring projections up over last year, but employers are also planning to increase starting salaries for this year’s new graduates. Here’s a deeper look at both encouraging trends for the class of 2011.”

Hiring outlook

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ 2011 job outlook, employers are planning to hire almost 20 percent more new graduates this fall than they did in the fall of 2010, the first double-digit year-over-year jump in hiring since 2007. The anticipated increase will also nearly halve the ratio of job seekers to job postings this year as well, bringing the number from 41-to-1 in 2010 to just 21-to-1 in 2011.

Which industries will provide the most jobs? The NACE survey reports that the most opportunities will be in accounting (public and private), consulting, financial analysis, sales, investment banking and management trainee programs; while a recent CareerBuilder survey on college hiring found that companies plan to recruit the most new grads in the areas of IT, customer service, sales, finance, accounting and marketing.

Regardless of major or degree, though, there are certain qualities that all employers will be looking for when they hire new talent. Human resources managers who responded to the CareerBuilder survey said that the most important areas of proficiency for a new grad are written and verbal communication, technical ability, project management, research and math.

Employers ranked the following as most important experiences for new grads:

1. Internships

2. Part-time jobs

3. Volunteer work

4. Class work

5. Involvement in school organizations

Salary outlook

In addition to more job opportunities, graduates from the class of 2011 can expect salary offers that are higher than the ones their counterparts in 2010 and 2009 received. Twenty-six percent of employers surveyed by CareerBuilder said they planned to increase salary offers to new grads this year, up from 16 percent in 2010 and 11 percent in 2009.

Computer Science $63,017

Mechanical Engineering $60,739

Computer Engineering $60,112

Information Sciences and Systems $56,868

Business Systems Networking/Telecommunications $56,808

The irony of this and every other data point we have been studying for three years is that the number of graduates in the highest paying jobs is going down.  STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) degrees are tougher to get, but the long term payoff is terrific.  Parents, please encourage your children to pursue STEM degrees.

Nashville Preparatory Charter School (www.NashvillePrep.org), a new grade 5-12 public charter school in North Nashville, is seeking a partner that can donate laptop computers for use by the school’s students. Nashville Technology Council chairman-elect Chris Sloan is a founding member of the school’s Board of Directors.

Nashville Prep’s Mission and Vision

Nashville Prep is one of two schools being launched by the TN Charter School Incubator, a project recently founded by Mayor Karl Dean to establish high quality public charter schools. Set to open on August 2, 2011, we eventually will serve students in grades 5-12. (Beginning with this year’s fifth grade class, we will add a grade after each subsequent year.) Most of our students come from North Nashville, and over 90% of them are on free or reduced lunch.  But we know that a college education is the key variable in breaking the chains of poverty. That’s why our mission is to send every one of our students to a four-year university. (We were recently profiled in the Nashville Scene and the Tennessean.)

To achieve that, we follow our guiding PREP values: Preparation; Respect; Engagement; and Persistence.

  • Preparation. We will prepare and be prepared—our school day runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., our school year is extended, our curriculum is academically rigorous, and we emphasize professional development for our teachers.
  • Respect. We will respect ourselves and each other—our behavioral standards are high and we place a premium on personal discipline.
  • Engagement. We will remain engaged in all that we do—our teachers will be fully engaged in students’ learning in school and at home, our students will participate in co-curricular activities such as debate and mock trial, civic activities such as voter registration, and will travel to places such as Washington, D.C. to see our nation’s government at work.
  • Persistence. We will show relentless persistence—we understand that there are no shortcuts and that hard work is our best and only path to success.

Technology is the Key

Technology is a central component of our plan to prepare our students for success. Not only will we rely on data and technology to measure, track, and evaluate the performance of our students and teachers, but we also will expose all of our students to technology and develop the skills they need to navigate through today’s computer- and technology-infused world. All of our students will take computer technology classes at least one hour per week and, as they progress through Nashville Prep, they will increasingly rely on computers to type their assignments and use the Internet to conduct research. Accordingly, it is critically important that our students have regular access to computers.

We Need Your Help

We are looking for a partner to donate new, refurbished, or recently replaced laptops. Laptops are expensive, and our funds are limited. (Due to space constraints, we are unable to accommodate desktop computers for our students.) And the less we spend on laptops, the more funds we have for other academic and enrichment programs. That is why we need YOU to help us acquire them. We do not need anything fancy—we hope to acquire a fleet of at least 30 laptops.

Nashville Prep can and will alter the trajectory of our students’ lives. We hope you can join us on that extraordinary journey.

Techville is Here!

Posted by: tfetherling  /  Tags: , , , ,

After many days and months of work, we are ready to release the 2011 Techville Map.  This year’s map features the same geo-spatial design, however, we have created industry specific lines and colors to highlight the core tech verticals in Nashville.  The background is a sharp black with vibrant colors overlayed to represent the energy of the community.  The map was designed by our very own Jessica Hill.

“It is truly a team project with every member of the team contributing to the success of the project,” said J. Tod Fetherling, President/CEO of the Nashville Technology Council.  “We believe it portrays Nashville as a significant player in technology.”

The Map will be distributed in the Nashville Business Journal tomorrow.

Nashville Startup Weekend Update

Welcome back to NSW3.

Today, we are focused on building.  Building a business plan, a pitch deck, and protecting company assets that are being created.  A special thanks to Waddey Patterson’s Ed Lanquist for leading an IP session this afternoon.

What is the first thing a company should do?  Write a business plan of course.  Attached is are two versions of sample business plans that I have used in the past.  Both help you answer questions.  They don’t do the work for you, nor should they.  It is important for the entrepreneur to go through this with their team and learn.

Yesterday, we had the unique opportunity to visit in person with our friends in Memphis.  I was pleasantly surprised by how much progress the entrepreneur and bio-sciences industry is making in Memphis.  Below is a sampling of the organizations we met with yesterday:

Emerge Memphis – EmergeMemphis, the focal point for entrepreneurial activity in the Mid-South, is a general business and technology-based incubator.

Launch Memphis – LaunchMemphis was established by a group of Memphis area leaders to grow the city’s entrepreneurial community.  Through events designed to highlight Memphis’ entrepreneurial activities, we hope to welcome and nurture new technology startup businesses.

Memphis Bioworks – The Memphis Bioworks® Foundation is bringing together public, private, academic and government entities in a collaborative effort to change the Memphis bioscience landscape. Established in 2001 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3), the Foundation’s is leading initiatives to expand upon the community’s current bioscience niches and demonstrated areas of leadership to create an internationally recognized center for the development and commercialization of bioscience technology.

University of Memphis Computer Sciences – The Department of Computer Science provides quality programs at all levels of study, and its faculty and students seek to excel in research, scholarship, and applications in fields where computation is of significant importance.

Zycron – The Z Team was one of the original founding companies of the Nashville Technology Council.  They have a Memphis office run by Steven Howard Smith.  Zycron is a customer-focused information technology services and solutions firm headquartered in Nashville, TN. Since 1991, Zycron has offered IT solutions to a broad client base and today is the primary provider for numerous Fortune 500 companies.
