Nashville, TN, March 17, 2022 — Hackathon International 2022 presented by Meharry Medical College concluded this weekend with Nick Arbuckle taking home the first-place prize for showcasing VIRO, a climate action activity tracker.
Hosted by Amazon, the hybrid remote, in-person Hackathon saw 100+ participants competing for innovative solutions on the Social Determinants of Health. The teams began developing at the start of the Hackathon on Saturday, March 12th, with a next-day showcase on Sunday, the 13th.
Along with their concept, design, and build, teams were required to include a 4-minute pitch video describing a unique innovation on “health and wellness in a community environment.”
Nick Arbuckle’s winning pitch inspired individual environmental action in the community through an activity tracker app and partnership with Eat Well Nashville, a local organic food delivery company.
“The fast-paced build was brought to life by Jeremy Redman, of no-code platform V-One,” says Arbuckle, “and the community outreach through Chris Ricci (Eat Well) supporting the vision of young entrepreneurs in Nashville.”
Adjudication of the Hackathon was performed by an esteemed panel of judges, including:
Veronica Mallett, President, Meharry Medical College Ventures
Vickie W. Harris, Founder and CEO, Community ConneXor
Scott T Massey, President, GPSS Global Services
Jay Billings, Principal Engineer, Amazon
Bryan Heckman, Director, Center for the Study of Social Determinants of Health, Meharry Medical College
“The Hackathon time constraints force a high pressure, intense environment bringing out the best in everybody,” Nick Arbuckle comments, “Thank you to the Amazon team for welcoming us into their space.”
