NASHVILLE TECHNOLOGY JOB GROWTH CONTINUES

Research Reveals 892 Openings in Technology in Q2.  112% Increase from Q1.

The Nashville Technology Council today announced the release of its Q2 2010 Technology Hiring Trends Report.  After extensive research, the report reveals over 892 technical jobs available in the Middle Tennessee area.  The report was generated from public job postings from large job portals (i.e. CareerBuilder, Monster, etc.), specialty technology sites (i.e. Dice) and local employer sites.

The highest number of openings came from enterprise health care technology companies: Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), Deloitte (D), and Community Health Systems (CHS).   In addition, other local industry heavyweights like music, publishing, manufacturing, and transactions continue to post job openings in technology.

The most prevalent technology positions are in software development.  Development is followed by Management, Analyst, Web Developers, and Network Engineers.  In addition to job openings, the report also illustrates programming languages that are most needed in the today’s technology industry.  .Net, Java, C#, and PHP are in highest demand for potential employees, as well as SQL database positions.

“Technology rebounded quickly as an industry in the second quarter.  In particular tech jobs in healthcare, digital content, publishing, and transactions,” said J. Tod Fetherling, President/CEO of Nashville Technology Council. “Nashville’s technology community has many exciting new opportunities for employment.”

The Nashville Technology Council also announced a partnership with Vaco to help fund and support the on-going job research initiative.  The two organizations will begin investigating a statewide initiative for the technology job report.

Join us today at Technology Nashville at the Curb Center where we will be discussing this and many more exciting areas of Nashville’s Technology Community.

The Nashville Technology Council announced the winners for the 2009 “Feel the Beat” Technology Awards.  The awards recognized those individuals and companies whose success has helped grow Nashville and the surrounding areas into a hub for technology. The event highlighted outstanding achievements from the 2008-2009 year.

Mayor Karl Deal opened the ceremony with a few words about the current state of Techville, a name given to the region by the Nashville Technology Council’s map project earlier this year.  Mayor Karl Dean remarked, “Technology jobs are an important factor in the growth of Nashville.  The workers make higher than average wages and help fuel key industries including healthcare, publishing, music, and transactions.”

“Nashville has a great collection of technology talent in its companies and technologists as evidenced by tonight’s winners,” said Andy Flatt, CIO, HealthSpring and Chairman of the Nashville Technology Council.  “The Nashville Technology Council is proud to bring this annual awards program to the region so we can recognize those companies that call Nashville home.”

Nashville Technology Council

J. Tod Fetherling is the President/CEO of the Nashville Technology Council.  He has lead the Technology Council through a growth phase that includes a re-branding of the 10 year old organization and increased membership by 16% in his first year to more than 385 companies connecting 23,000 tech workers in Middle Tennessee and over 2.1 million employees worldwide.  He brings his entrepreneurial background to help local tech companies succeed.

Formerly Mr. Fetherling was the Chief Product Officer of ConnectivHealth.  ConnectivHealth acquired Relegent, where Mr. Fetherling served as the Chief Executive Officer.  He oversaw product development for the company.  ConnectivHealth has four main business lines: Discovery Hospital, a partnership with Discovery Health Channel; HealthTeacher, the leading K-12 Health Curriculum in Internet and Print; Healthcare BrandPrint, a comprehensive branding package for small to medium sized hospitals and VerusMed, clinical briefing for physicians.

Formerly, Mr. Fetherling was Vice President of Business Development at First Consulting Group (FCG), a healthcare technology consulting practice specializing in health delivery, health plans and life sciences.   FCG purchased UCR Solutions in June 2002, where Mr. Fetherling served as a Board Member.

Before FCG, Mr. Fetherling served as Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy.com, LLC, the first searchable Internet directory.  Galaxy.com was sold to Logika Corporation (Chicago) in June 2001.  Launched in January 1994, Galaxy was created as part of the EINET division at the MCC Research Consortium at the University of Texas, Austin.  Mr. Fetherling served as Senior Vice President of The Health Network from 1998 to 2000, overseeing the Interactive operations of one of the largest Cable/Internet Health companies.  In May 1999, Fox/News Corporation became co-owner of Galaxy and AHN.

AHN.COM set a record for attracting the most visitors ever to a single live broadcast event on the Internet by broadcasting the birth of a child – a significant first. On June 18, 1998 more than 1.4 million people accessed this videostream at AHN.COM, which made it the most-visited health Internet site and increased traffic to the site ten-fold. For his work with The Health Network, Mr. Fetherling was named the Trevor A. Fisk 1999 Young Marketer of the Year, a prestigious honor that recognizes the contributions of outstanding healthcare marketing professionals.

Prior to joining The Health Network, Mr. Fetherling served as Senior Manager, Interactive Marketing, at Brown-Forman Beverages Worldwide where he redesigned the ever popular Jack Daniels website (http://www.jackdaniels.com).

Mr. Fetherling served as Director of Interactive Marketing at Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation, where he created the vision, strategy and implementation for www.columbia.net, one of the Internet’s first major health portals. Columbia’s site was profitable in 18 months and won numerous awards, including a Top Rating from Excite and recognition as a top healthcare site for Business-to-Business by AdAge.  U.S. News and World Report also selected the site as one of the best eight sites in 1995.  In addition to overseeing the Internet development at Columbia, Mr. Fetherling implemented an interactive kiosk network, placing kiosks offering access to www.columbia.net at hospitals and other public facilities nationwide. He also created the company’s Intranet (Koala) strategy.

Mr. Fetherling is the author of “Surveying Your Community” and “Columbia Internet Case Study,” published in the Journal of Healthcare Marketing, and contributed to 1997 Guide to Healthcare and the Internet and the book Net Income. Stimulating EHRs

The Nashville Tech Story (6/25/09)

Are we ready for the next WebMD?  Why aren’t the next generation of EHR companies springing up all over Nashville?  We have the talent, funding, and experience.  Is it too soon?  No business model?

To be honest, I don’t know the answer, but I do know enough people are interested in the topic to warrant a breakfast or two.  I presented this topic at HealthCamp 2.0 and there was a lot of interest in continuing the discussion.  If you are interested in the topic and want to dive deeper into the conversation, let’s meet up at Noshville (on Broadway) next Wednesday morning at 7:30 – 8:30 AM.  If there is sufficient interest/discussion, we can meet more frequently.

Experts at our local hospital companies have been integrating virtually every healthcare platform for the past 30 years.  Every time they do an acquisition, they integrate the clinicals and financials.  They integrate physician data and practice management systems.  We have more experience than any other city at this task.  As was evidenced today at the Nashville Health Care Council Luncheon, Nashville is rich in healthcare talent and there is a lot of interest in this topic at all levels.  We are so blessed to have the Nashville Health Care Council.

This is my view of the opportunity – NASHEHR – The Nashville Electronic Health Record.  This is only meant as an outline.  I have a really cool graphic of the information below to show how this all fits together.  I drew on a whiteboard at Lipscomb University.  Do you think it is still there?  Probably not.  I will try to re-create it before next Wednesday and give everyone a copy.  I am sure a lot of people will argue with me about the parts and I welcome the criticism and feedback.

1.    First some Definitions – PHR, EHR, EMR

a. Personal Health Record – Consumer lead compiling of health record
b. Electronic Health Record – Consumer/Provider partnership with integration
c. Electronic Medical Record – Hospital/Physician Based Information Systems with Clinician Data Access

2.    Regional Health Data Repository (1.5 Million Records CBSA / 6 Million if we want to do it statewide)

3.    Interface Engines (SeeBeyond (Sun) and Cloverleaf (Healthvision)

4.    Secure Connections – HTTPS/Tunneling

5.    Providers – Hospitals, Physicians, Home Health, Surgery Centers, Nursing Homes, Pharmacy, Labs

6.    Payers – BCBS, TNCare, CIGNA, Wellpoint, United

7.    Consumers – Google, HealthVault, BCBS, TNCare, H2U

8.    Analytics/Surveillance/GIS – Draw Maps, Charts, Red/Green Lights

9.    Potential Companies in Nashville that are leading or could lead the way.

a. Vanderbilt lead Tech Transfer from Center for Better Health
b. Credence Health (Quality)
c. Change Healthcare
d. HMS
e. Data Advantage
f. Emdeon
g. Others/New Entrants?

Below are some needs in Nashville that we could focus on together and these should have a long term return to the city and tech community.

1.    Experienced Government Grant writers to get some stimulus money
2.    Public/Private Cooperative to make a Regional Health Data Repository Operational
3.    Seed funding for 4-5 companies that can focus on PHRs, EHRs, and EMRs.
4.    The NTC will even donate a domain name to a new startup – http://www.nashehr.com

So, let’s start a discussion about EHRs.  Maybe we can stimulate a few businesses or at least some ideas.

Look inside first.

When we think of sourcing, often times we forget about Insourcing.  Yes, that’s right.  Insourcing is a wonderful opportunity to drive innovation inside the organization.  I have heard countless times where employees thought they could do it, but weren’t considered.  Often times, you can bring a multi-disciplinary team together as well including IT, Marketing, Legal, Finance, and Operations.

The potential benefits of insourcing include improved employee morale, greater sense of accomplishment, identification of internal thought leaders, and greater control of development.  The potential pitfalls are priority shifts, loss of productivity, missed deadlines on other projects, and longer time to market.

Like all insourced, outsourced, or offshore models, the management of the project itself is the number one priority.  A good project manager will make or break the overall success no matter where the services are ultimately delivered.  In the Agile Development world, daily scrums can be achieved whether the application is being developed internally or externally.

Recently, I spoke with Mary Silva Doctor with HCA’s IT&S.  Mary will be leading our Insourcing Panel discussion on Thursday, May 7, 2009.  Mary said they use Flex Sourcing at HCA.  Flex Sourcing is a combination of insourcing, outsourcing, and offshoring.  They look at the application or support function and determine where the resources are available right now.  If there is an internal group available, then they go internal.  If internal resources are not available, then they look outside the organization.  This is where they determine whether it can be sourced in the states or offshore.  Often times this is when they have to look at whether they need 24/7 resources or not.  They have a detailed matrix to make the final decision on sourcing.

Last but not least, internally sourced functions should consider creating service level agreements for their internal customers.  This helps you manage expectations with other departments and creates a more professional approach to your delivery of projects and functions.

Please join us on Thursday, May 7, 2009 for a Virtual Trade Mission where we will investigate insourcing, outsourcing, and offshoring.
